There is good news and bad news for fans of Netflix’s Lost in Space reboot. That series will be coming back for a third season, but that will be its last. Keeping in line with its typical pattern of capping off shows after their third or fourth season, Netflix has chosen to end the reboot of the Irwin Allen classic after a three-year run. Showrunner Zack Estrin had the following to say about the series coming to an end:
From the beginning, we’ve always viewed this particular story of The Robinsons as a trilogy. A three-part epic family adventure with a clear beginning, middle and end. It’s also worth noting that, with what these characters go through just trying to survive each episode — if anyone deserves to catch their breath before their next mission — it’s Will, Penny, Judy, Maureen, John, Don West, Dr. Smith… and The Robot. And, of course, Debbie the Chicken. So while this chapter of Lost In Space is coming to a rousing conclusion, I’m excited about continuing to explore new stories with my friends at Netflix, and for all of the incredible possibilities that lie ahead.
The new stories to which he refers will likely not involve a sequle series to Lost in Space, but Estrin has signed on for new development projects with the streaming service. The show has been well-received by fans and drew high viewership in its first season, but it has not appeared in any of Netflix’s lists of most-watched shows for its second year. Season 2 had its premiere in late December last year, and the third season will likely arrive later in 2020 or early 2021.
Lost in Space follows the Robinson family who are part of an expedition to colonize Alpha Centauri but who find themselves stranded on a mysterious and dangerous planet after their ship goes off course. It stars Molly Parker, Toby Stephens, Maxwell Jenkins, Taylor Russell, and Mina Sundwall.
The current season will be winding down soon and we should expect to hear word on the fate of shows such as USA’s The Purge, ABC’s Emergence, and more.
