TV by the Numbers and the Cancellation Bear Have Been . . . Cancelled

After a long run that began in 2007, the TV by the Numbers website put up its last post on January 31, 2020.  Started by Robert Seidman and Bill Gorman, it was the first website dedicated exclusively to reporting on television ratings.  It also made predictions on which shows would be cancelled or renewed and the Cancellation Bear became the mascot for the site (you don’t have to outrun the bear, you just have to be faster than the slowest person running from him).  The Bear’s last set of predictions were posted on November 8, 2019, and then nothing else was heard from him, suggesting that something was amiss with the site.  The daily and weekly posts continued up until the end of the month when the final post announced the website’s end.

Daily ratings numbers are still available at sites like ShowBuzz Daily, Spotted Ratings, TV Series Finale, and Program Insider.   And the TV Grim Reaper posts weekly predictions for the broadcast networks similar to what the Cancellaton Bear did (written by Bill Gorman who was previously the Bear before a buyout of the site by Tribune Digital Ventures in 2014).  CancelledSciFi.com also continues to track the ratings for all of the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks and cable channels with our Cancellation Watch posts.  We also post the season-to-date ratings results at this link, usually on Tuesdays or Wednesdays.  There are fewer and fewer genre entries on the linear networks as the streaming services continue to dominate the market for scripted originals.  But we are still tracking what is on and still making predictions.  And we do track the digital ratings data available from Nielsen, Netflix, and other sources.  You can see the status of all the currently airing and returning sci fi and fantasy shows at this link.

TV by the Numbers was a site that I relied upon regularly and it will be sad to see it go. It is yet another reminder that it is difficult for a news website to sustain itself these days, especially if its content is free. CancelledSciFi.com has been around since 2012 and we do not plan on going anywhere soon, though please visit our sponsors in order to help us cover our costs so that we can continue to bring you coverage of science fiction and fantasy television.
